"Why don’t people care more about economic inequality?"

Because tomorrow, or certainly by next week, the shoe will be on the other foot.

Perhaps subconsciously, we then respond by thinking those citizens deserve less

It isn't just subconsciously. I have a relative who will flatly tell you that large segments of the population don't deserve a minimum wage of $15/hr. No real economic reason, but that they aren't worthy.

I consider this odd because she is a cake decorator at a Sam's, but...

It is a problem if free markets don't catch us. They definitely won't if they are destroyed by government trying to "fix" the "problem." Government's record at improving on free markets is not good.

While I have often made fun of CJ and others for misconstruing Henry Ford's famous comment (about how giving his employees raises would make the company profitable) a variant of the concept will come into play if markets for goods fall short of demand. The invisible hand will apply pressure to let go of money and share the wealth, but in ways that don't crush productivity.

Consumption is the tool of productivity, and productivity drives growth.

This looks like a lost cause but there is some evidence to support the idea that markets will at least slow the bleeding. My concern is that government will step in in a panic and kill the sufferent economy while trying to save it from itself.
