It is a horrible language by today's standards. But it was functional at the time (60s/70s). And it is trivial to keep it alive for those who want it.

I also found that I could easily translate it to other languages, as well as write new systems, with a simple stream editor script, so there was value in it.

But you cannot reasonably compare it with today's languages since it lacks basic features of event driven architectures.

They should teach COBOL today ....it would be like Latin....make young people appreciate all the new building blocks

I am not a fan, to be honest. But it was specified by Grace Hopper and her team way back in the 1950s. Languages didn't go that way.
