It is a horrible language by today's standards. But it was functional at the time (60s/70s). And it is trivial to keep it alive for those who want it. I also found that I could easily translate it to other languages, as well as write new systems, with a simple stream editor script, so there was value in it. But you cannot reasonably compare it with today's languages since it lacks basic features of event driven architectures.
