>> Many students borrow money for degrees that have no chance of ever paying back the institutions absurd tuition for that degree.

Normally, the lender has a responsibility to make sure the loan makes sense. After all, it is from the return on the lender's investment that the loan will be repaid. When I got ready to first go to graduate school, I needed $3,000 beyond my assistanceship payment to get through the program. I went to the local bank, sat down with the owner, and told him I needed to borrow some money to go to grad school on. He knew what my background was, but took about 15 minutes to ask me what I planned to study, to hear my plans and then he made a decision based on that.

I am certain that had I told Mr. Ryburn that I was getting a masters in Gender Studies he would have said, "I don't think so. You want to do engineering, that's one thing. But Gender Studies, you're on your own."

The school loan program needs to die. Tomorrow. And if that happened, the cost of attending university would drop overnight. By a LOT. And excellent online programs would become far more attractive alternatives.
