Which, if it isn't in reference to something that is being argued, is totally meaningless.

That's both false and irrelevant. False because "if it isn't in reference to something being argued" doesn't imply or suggest that its meaningless (people can make their own new assertions and argue for them). Irrelevant because bentway did suggest that revenue should be maximized (and others in different contexts, have suggested that even if higher taxes did reduce revenue they still would be justified in terms of fairness)

As for the general subject of the Laffer curve, its a very important point. Higher and higher taxes will eventually reduce revenue, and before that happens you still get more and more private sector impact of each additional dollar of government revenue. Sure it would be even more meaningful if we could have accurate consistent specific numbers, but the general point is both true and important even without those numbers.

Like the general downward trend in the USA of mobility. Tim posted some dude's screed positing this was the root of our economic malaise (IIRC) but the guy provided absolutely no argument for how much mobility was "optimal" (just like the Laffer Curve appears to be "unknowable" too!) but there is this assumption that we are known to be to the side of optimal that requires us to lower taxes or do whatever Republican proclivities generally want...
