"I guess Peter Lynch said those things only to ensure that his "One Up on Wall Street" (and its near carbon copy, "Beating the Street") became bestsellers..."

I read Lynch and recognized much of his position in Fisher's book "Uncommon profits from common stocks." (I think I remember this correctly.) Anyway, I thought Lynch said, 'if you see a product selling well in your local store then check the company's fundamentals out further. Good local sales can often be an early tip off to a good investment, but the fundamentals have to check out.'

I do agree with the statements here that the Fool advice on this stock was foolish. They make me nervous--too much flash for me, I guess.
