Actually...English was the preferred method of notation when I learned. The Algebraic is now the preferred method.

But old habits die hard and I always found it easier. To each his/her own.

I think what you refer to as "Impasse" may be "En Passant". French for "In Passing". The rule that allows a player to capture a pawn in passing if the player's pawn is on his/her 5th rank and the opponent 'passes' a pawn to his/her fourth.
