Another company to think about in terms of equipment spending is IBM. Apparently, they are planning to get into the ASIC market in a big way. They have superb manufacturing technology, and likely have either developed or are developing/buying the needed libraries. This move _might_ require thay they buy a significant amount of manufacturing equipment, although it is also possible that they already have capacity in place.

LSI's problems may be very company specific, and may not reflect on logic in general. Rumor has it that they are having major problems with manufacturing at their new fab and they are having significant attrition rates among personel.
