I think it will finaly take off when WIN 98 is released. Most new PCs have USB support on-board if not brought out to a connector. The major peripherals suppliers offer USB on their printers, etc. but a lot of the scanners and other stuff I see still doesn't support it. USB and the faster firewire buses make a lot of sense for the consumer and corporate markets because it should finaly make the benefits of "plug and pray" real. This is something the industry should have started doing several years ago but as long as you are rolling in money making kludgy legacy hardware and there is only Microsoft and Intel as real unifying forces, its been dificult to get cooperation among the entire world-wide industry. I think WIN 98 combined with the benefits it will deliver to corporate and consumer applications will make if finally gain momentum - next fall's line up of products should stress it.
