It's not obvious to the people in his cult. There is such a fascinating split on the right between people who see the Russia story as an attack on the US, and those who think it's a fake news attack on Trump. Are you the only conservative on SI who still thinks Russia is a threat to the West?

Big government conservatives have never been against spending- they just spend money on different things than liberals would spend money on.

I don't think you can put Trump into either political party- he's an oligarchic kleptocrat. The republican party may have been captured by him, but they aren't, essentially, Trumpian- demagogues do this, and they come along pretty frequently, and humans have a hard time resisting the siren song of easy answers to complex problems, and promises of easy wins. So much winning!

It's human nature to prefer the easy path- unfortunately it's rarely the path that brings the most rewards or the optimal, or even livable, solution. Not personally, and not in government.
