Underground mining has almost all been run on electricity for decades for ventilation reasons.

So yes, you CAN do all kinds of things with electricity. But you need to generate that electricity and provide it to the mine.

To eliminate fossil fuel generation would mean we'd need a massive increase in solar and wind. Not just matching capacity. Since the capacity factors are low, we'd need massive backup.

Imagine being at work underground and the power goes out for who knows how long because the wind shifted. People could and would die.

Imagine a hospital's power going down and they don't have fossil fueled generators for backup.

But hey, those are just sacrifices the greens would say are worthwhile.
