Greg - Re: "OS/Windows system which will rival Microsoft's Windows 98...Any hints that something may be in the works..or are the 3 too afraid of MSFT to try and invade this turf?"

Windows 98 OS equivalent by Intel/HP/Oracle - no - absolutely not.

However, Intel, for their IA64 MERCED, is working with HP and SCO on UNIX, with DEC/Sequent on their version of UNIX/NUMA and with Sun Microsystems on their Solaris OS.

Intel is putting enormous resources into insuring that full blown, enterprise level 64 bit UNIX O/S will be available in may flavors to help get MERCED designed into major corporate enterprise accounts.

Intel and Oracle and SAP and many other major software producers are working on porting these products to IA64/Merced - using the Unix O/S systems described above.

Now as far as Microsoft and Intel - let me offer the following - Intel wants to insure that a 64 bit version of Windows NT is available for Merced in a timely fashion.

To that end, Intel is taking the appropriate steps necessary to make that happen!
