Sprint PCS buys remaining stake in Sprint Spectrum. From this morning's Washington Post: Sprint Spectrum is a GSM system in the Washington-Baltimore area with 230K subscribers. Sprint PCS has bought the remaining 41.5 % they did not own before and are putting CDMA antennas on the GSM towers. CDMA service to begin in the first half of this year. Sprint PCS has not announced its plans for the current subscribers. One main option is to decommission the GSM system, giving subscribers CDMA phones at a discount to keep them happy. Other options involve splitting available spectrum between the two systems. An industry analyst is quoted as expecting a big CDMA push.

Michael, A better thought on voice recognition is the possibility of incorpating the heavy duty stuff on a wireless network server. This could be a smart base station. The next generation of PCS phones (to be released this qtr) will have basic recognition for names and numbers. Recognition gets interesting when you can communicate with the existing e-mail infracstructure. A technology to transit from our current "Words on Paper" environment to a "Pure Voice" environment.

Whatever happens, Bruce is right. It will be fun. Do you own any COMS?

Michael:

Your point about the Palm Pilot is very appropriate. I am a Pilot user and find that the Graffiti hand writing s/w is good enough for most purposes. The great thing is the ability of the Pilot to synchronize with my Laptop. Given that a keyboard(puny in any case) may not be needed for the phones/pim devices
