Here's a PDF that discusses TA and indicators. Starting at page 16, there's a relatively quick rundown of some sentiment indicators and their usefulness.

For "grand scheme" sentiment, you can look at the chart I posted and see how low this indicator was in 2009 and again in early 2016. Probably it's a little better for pointing out negativity than as a top is forming indicator.
