Digital BS Standard to Include 720P Scanning

January 7, 1998 (TOKYO) -- A new technical standard for
digital broadcast satellite transmissions slated to start in 2000
will include 720P, a progressive scanning method with 720 scanning
lines, according to industry experts.

Japan's Telecommunications Technology Council, an advisory group to
the Minister of Posts and Telecommunications, previously announced
an interim digital satellite broadcasting standard adopting 1080I, which
has 1,080 scanning lines and interlaced scanning, 480P with
progressive scanning and 480I. It said it would continue deliberations
on 720P.

An ad hoc committee of the Telecommunications Technology Council
consisting of members from the broadcasting and personal computer
industries, has pushed forward the deliberations.

According to industry experts, the 720P method will be adopted in the
new standard on condition that it is proven viable in pilot tests.

The broadcasting industry has opposed adoption of 720P and the
personal computer industry has supported it.

The broadcasting said there has been a lack of equipment compatible
with the 720P system, and unlike 1080I and others that already have
been accepted as a standard, no pilot test has been implemented for the
720P yet.
