As this sinks in globally, I expect it to cause us considerable economic harm.

There will be consequences, large and small. As this sinks in here, one wonders about the reaction. We have witnessed in our own society that people with privilege don't recognize it as privilege and react non-constructively when it is lost. There is a lot of privilege that goes with being top dog on the planet. Simple things, like the fact that everyone who is anyone speaks English. I remember when you had to take a dictionary and use a lot of sign language or hire a guide in Europe let alone in remote locations. Life is so much easier without a language barrier. Perhaps technology will eventually take care of the loss of ubiquitous English or maybe English will stick. I majored in languages as an undergrad. I sure wouldn't want to have to learn any version of Chinese. Like I said, relatively small thing, but one of a bundle of benefits of privilege that come unnoticed. Nice to not have to wait for a translation of a book.

It wouldn't be so bad if some cataclysmic event took it all away, but to squander it, well, there's not much sadder than lost opportunity.
