"I think the point is clear: while the early mentions of global warming were almost 150 years ago, the use of it as a tool is not a conspiracy"
The conspiracy...

n 1991, a US corporate coalition including the National Coal Association, the Western Fuels Association and Edison Electrical Institute created a public relations organization called the " Information Council on the Environment" (ICE). ICE launched a $500,000 advertising campaign to, in ICE's own words, "reposition global warming as theory (not fact)." Critics of industry groups have charged that the claims about a global warming controversy are part of a deliberate effort to reduce the impact any international treaty, such as the Kyoto Protocol, might have on their business interests. the use of it as a tool is not a conspiracy and is recent

I suppose it depends on how you define "recent". For the fact of global warming, it has been discussed for decades. There are news reels discussing the issue from the 1950s. The media didn't really latch onto it until the early 1980s. I remember some of my friends were worried that Galveston would be flooded soon. I explained to them that it takes some time to melt enough ice...

Oceanographers were certainly aware of it in the 1970s. That was the consensus explanation of why the oceans had risen 17cm since 1900. I learned that in school during that time frame.

Now, if you mean global warming denial, that didn't start until the 1990s. In fact, the term "climate change" was popularized by Republicans because they thought the term "global warming" would spur people to action.
