TJ,

The US military did learn important lessons from Vietnam. It is called the Powell Doctrine:

worldpoliticsreview.com

Unfortunately, the civilian neocons in the State Department hated it because it limited their constant
meddling and regeime change policies around the world.

Their viewpoint is that they can use the military to strongarm their policies in limited conflicts.

It is the height of arrogance to think they can limit a conflict once commenced.

Unintended consequences can be a real bitch!
