Hitachi Demonstrates HDTV

LAS VEGAS--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Jan. 7, 1998--Hitachi Home Electronics (America), Inc. announced today that it will
demonstrate its innovative and feature-rich 61" UltraVision High Definition TV (HDTV) at the International CES Show in Las
Vegas (Display Room N-203).

The result of more than a decade of research and development by teams of engineers in both the U.S. and Japan, Hitachi's
HDTV offering delivers on the promise of advanced digital television.

Hitachi's HDTV provides pristine, high resolution picture quality (1920 x1080 I) on a 61" screen. The UltraFocus super bright
lens system, UltraFocus super bright CRT's, Magic Focus auto digital convergence, digital 3DYC comb filter, and advanced
velocity scan modulation, complement full Dolby Digital and Dolby Pro Logic Surround Sound and a 60 watt bass reflex
speaker system for superb home theater enjoyment. Its tuner section allows for receipt of all 18 ATSC DTV formats, includes
a built-in DSS IRD with Smart Card Input Slot, and a 181 Channel NTSC Tuner. Hitachi has also incorporated an impressive
array of advanced and convenient features that have become expected with Hitachi's UltraVision line of leading projection TV.

"Our HDTV carries on the Hitachi tradition of innovation and technical excellence with robust features and optics quality that is
second to none," said Gary Bennett, executive vice president. "Customers who have come to rely on UltraVision projection
TV for its uncompromising picture quality and depth of features will be even more impressed by our initial HDTV offering."

Last month, Hitachi and Thomson Consumer Electronics, Inc. announced that they have agreed to jointly develop HDTV sets
for the introduction of HDTV digital terrestrial broadcasting in the U.S. in the Fall of 1998.

In making the announcement, the two companies said the U.S. market can be served more efficiently and with greater cost
efficiency by combining shared resources and technology. Each company will contribute its particular area of strength in
developing the first high definition projection televisions that will be marketed independently under the companies' respective
brands. Hitachi will provide an advanced large screen display for the projection receivers, based on its highly regarded rear
projection display technology. Thomson will be responsible for digital technology that includes reception and decoding
capability.

HDTV/digital broadcasts are expected to begin in 10 large markets in the U.S. next Fall, the start of a gradual change to a
new broadcast standard for the United States that will require new broadcast facilities and new television receivers for HDTV
reception. "Because it will take time for HDTV/digital broadcasts to be widely available across the country, we have made
significant strides in pulling as much digital technology from our HDTV research into our current line of UltraVision projection
televisions," said Bennett. "By offering complementary digital peripherals for our current PTVs, such as our DVD players,
DSS Systems and much talked about Digital VHS, we continue to offer enormous choices to our current customers who want
to maximize enjoyment of quality PTVs today."
