Richard, so far as I can find, Monsanto's DHA is from Algae, as you said, and their first commercial product was Omega-3 DHA eggs, which was marketed overseas starting in 1996.

So...... they've been at the Algae-DHA game for a while. I couldn't find anything about them getting into "full term" infant formula (It doesn't mean that they aren't planning to do this), and I'm not thru looking.

I, also, don't like the idea of a Monsanto Giant "possibly" competing against tiny Martek. But, I like the fact that three execs from Merck thought highly enough about Martek to switch companies. They must know something that we don't, right? In other words, why leave the comfort of Merck's executive washrooms for Martek's keyless one-room bathrooms, if there aren't significant "other" benefits, or a significant opportunity for success?!

I'm going to keep looking for some Monsanto DHA stuff. Do you remember if the article mentioned anything about formula? It really makes sense for them to get into this area. It looks like it could be very profitable.

I'm going to look for patent info also. Perhaps someone with more knowledge than myself can call the company on this matter?

Thanks, Bob

Martek's "Profile" page, on SI, which is a little old (from 1996 10K) comments about Monsanto's DHA product (at that time) and mentions a little about Martek's patent protection.

If Monsanto, or anyone else, is getting on the DHA/ARA formula bandwagon, they certainly aren't beating the drums about it.

Bottom line: GO MATK!

Regards, Bob
