The laws of physics make a linear solar farm financially impractical.

DC line losses in transmission require electricity to be converted to AC for transmission to have worthwhile efficiency, but having a linear system thousands of miles long would require too many inverters over the distances involved, and cable sizes that are too large to make it economically feasible.
