Steve, I run several instances of firefox pretty much always. My system is an I5 running ubuntu 16.10. My apts load from an SSD.
When I leave the browsers running, often after several hours of no use they are very slow, sluggish. I'm guessing it something to do with caching. Anyway I have a kill function in my dropdown menu, I kill the process and th restart it. About 5 seconds and then the browser is again responsive. I have also found that there are some web pages that when left open tend to grow in memory use.
