Hi Steve: Thanks for your June 9th response to my question "What is deterring you from doing so " (i.e. abandoning Windows OS) and installing a Linux distro to replace it? My apologies for the tardy response back. I started a response in a text editor and got distracted as I too often do. << Skip to the end if you want the short version. >> The long version was fine. You and I have had different experiences with various Windows versions running on different communicating DPE and consequently have different perspectives. That's a good thing. We don't need group think on this board. We use an exceptional variety of gear, various OS, application software or apps on a day to day basis. We also have varying proficiencies and personal/prosumer skill sets. We all learn form each other here and have some fun in the process.. << What's a DPE? >> Good question and one I myself asked the instructor of an evening class at the local U back in '95 when he used the acronym to describe Data Processing Equipment . The term crept into my vernacular way back then and I frequently use it more than I hear it. Today it would be a catch all term that would include a work station, desktop, laptop, or MID and even a tablet or smartphone if used for 'computing' with or without a keyboard, mouse, trackball or touchpad. Unlike You I've never used a distro running on the Linux kernel although I have several friends that are quite proficient in Linux, all to supplement their computing experience on a Microsoft and/or Apple OS. It's been on my bucket list for some time but something I've never gotten around to. It's still on the list. Someday. Probably/Maybe. I do find it unfortunate that there are no really active Linux boards on SI. The most active has only 5 posts this year, 3 by our board mate FUBHO, and 1 by Thomas A Watson. To avoid this post getting too long I'll end here for now but I'll likely revisit and address some of the points You have made about Microsoft software or practices where your view substantially differs from my own. Cheers, - Eric L. -
