I do not think the man who opened fire was insane. First of all, from reading this article from the NY Times, the man asked a Congressman in the parking lot whether it was Republicans or Democrats who were practicing on the field and was told by the Congressman that they were all Republicans. The man then went on a shooting spree.

This sounds like a rational political shooting to me. Does the shooter have a previous record of killing people?

The shooter was not a mass murderer. He targeted a specific political party. How is that any different from the start of a revolutionary movement?
