HP launches $799 using INTC's CPU
The battle to capture home buyers of PCs heated up Monday with
HEWLETT PACKARD's launch of a $799 system, a move aimed directly
at the fastest growing segment of home PC sales. Over the past
year, H-P's competitors, led by COMPAQ, have aggressively raced to
offer "sub-$1,000" PCs as consumers flocked to low-cost machines.
HP's new, lowest cost system is at a suggested price of $799,
which matches the retail price of a system offered by Compaq.
Also, it is the first at the price to include a processor made by
INTEL CORP. Analysts said the move could mean an edge in
attracting brand-conscious customers. (Reuters 06:42 PM ET

COMPAQ, which last year helped ignite the hot sub-$1,000
category of PCs, will introduce a new line of Presario computers
aimed at home and small business customers Tuesday. And, in a move
that could intensify an already-heated pricing environment for
microprocessors, some of these machines will be powered by
ADVANCED MICRO DEVICE's K6 chip - an alternative to INTEL CORP's
Pentium II. Compaq will unveil 15 new Presarios Tuesday, with
three desktop machines and one notebook powered by the K6. Still,
most of the computers will use Intel's Pentium II chips. (Reuters
