Why don't opinion articles like that one actually put numbers behind all the handwaving?

The problem is the dearth of numbers.

I have written on this board a few times that proponents of single payer have no idea how much it would cost and underplay the potential cost for various reasons, innumeracy being one. The last time I posted that I was unaware of the report upon which the Post based its editorial. It's not much but it's something, which is better than nothing.

They could say countries X, Y, and Z...

They, who? Surely not the Post editorial board. They can't do studies like that. They can only opine based on the work of others and others haven't done the work.

One of the reasons that proponents are so cavalier about costs is that everyone else does healthcare cheaper, ergo we can, too. That's not good enough. We need careful analysis. We are not them in many ways and single payer is not well represented among them, either. In the immortal albeit belated words of Donald J. Trump, it's complicated.
