Newspaper delivery for a weekly, probably 12 at the time. All houses on both sides of a Seattle arterial, just over a mile.

All for the munificent sum of 85¢ a week.

Through a family friend I got a job as a bag boy at Purity Markets (a popular chain in the Bay Area then). I was 14 and the youngest member of the Retail Clerks Union.

At 17 I became a checker...no scan bars back then. Prices on cans were written on the top with a grease pencil... Produce was weighed at the check stand.

I will never forget my Dad's temper tantrum when he found out that he could no longer declare me as a Dependent to the IRS.

Mowing lawns when I was 12.

By the time I was 14 I'd progressed to working for a farmer, mending fences and painting barns. Worked for another farmer feeding the dry heifers in the winter and making hay.

Mowing lawns as a young teen or maybe a late pre-teen. Don't remember the exact age.

Then a paper route.

My first job with a pay check was bagging groceries. That was also my first job I got fired from. I was with my family about a 5 hour drive from home and my job. My mom got sick and didn't go home that day. I called in that I wouldn't be able to make it. Actually let them know the day before, but got fired anyway.

Mowing lawns. Then at a dock, scaling fish and pulling the guts and spines out of squid.
