every kid I knew had a paper route

My dream then was to get a route for the Seattle Times, rather than a weekly shopper. That was where the real money was. Problem was there was a lot of competition.

I did succeed in talking two brothers into letting me be their sub on a pretty big route. Spent a long time learning where to deliver.

They finally called me -- once -- for a Sunday AM delivery. Can't figure out now what the reason was, but that day the Times put out a special edition, each weighing 56 lbs or thereabouts.

Normally a scrawny kid could load the canvas carrier and do the entire route in one fell swoop. I recollect trudging back to the distribution point way too many times that miserable day.

Wish I could remember those brothers names. I'd still like to hunt them down.
