It is both a male and a female - Neither gender seems to be free of the plague. This is not about being a prude but being prudent.

The media has definitely helped shape this- they show young men and women college "experiences" on TV and in movies that have the "necessary" component of casual sex and rampant drinking and drug use. It is a real disservice to young people to do this. My youngest daughter has now lived with 2 sets of room mates - and each set has had at least one young woman who trolled for casual sex. One was a sorority girl and one was a heavy (but very nice) young woman who was obviously dealing with some insecurity issues. In the case of the sorority girl, one of the young men was so drunk one night that he wandered (naked) into my daughter's room- she'd accidentally left her door unlocked after going to the bathroom.

My older daughter had 4 room mates at Davis, and one of them picked up guys off Craig's list. We always put individual locks on our kids rooms (swapping out the regular door handles) and were especially glad we did that with my oldest, since her room mate was picking up strange men- we thought that was a real safety issue, and luckily my daughter found a new set of room mates the next year.
