Shareholders had been surprised to find this rollback mentioned for the first time in the information circular that Spartan sent out in mid-May. Although Spartan had not previously discussed a rollback, its share count had gone up significantly in 2016 as a result of acquisitions. There were five major acquisitions in total during the year, worth a combined $860-million. The largest was the $700-million purchase of all of the Saskatchewan assets of ARC Resources (ARX-T) in December. These deals pushed Spartan's share count to nearly 527 million from 265 million at the beginning of 2016. Spartan said in its circular that it wanted to reduce its share count "to a level more in keeping with its industry peers." Shareholders obliged, voting over 98 per cent in favour of the rollback, according to the report of voting results filed on SEDAR. Shareholders were somewhat less co-operative when it came to the re-election of Spartan's directors. Although all five director nominees were re-elected, their levels of voting support were noticeably lower than last year. At last year's meeting, the average percentage of votes withheld for these five nominees was less than 3.5 per cent, with the most popular director, Rick McHardy -- who is also the president and CEO -- seeing just 0.01 per cent of votes withheld. At yesterday's meeting, the average percentage of votes withheld soared to nearly 12 per cent. Mr. McHardy remained the most popular, but his withheld percentage was still markedly higher, at 2.6. Regardless of the meeting, Mr. McHardy must be in a good mood these days. He was named "Saskatchewan Oilman of the Year" by the Saskatchewan Oil Industry Board of Governors at a special ceremony in Weyburn this month. He was also inducted into the Saskatchewan Oil Patch Hall of Fame Freebie from Stockwatch
