I wouldn't worry about throwing away a few cfls.

I replaced the incandescent lights in our new house in 1980 with fluorescent. People thought I was nuts. But we lived there for 15 years and seldom did I replace bulbs (tubes). Very little heat, better light than incandescent. And saved money, too.

But LEDs are the only way to go at this point. Better light, last forever.

I'm getting ready to replace the fluorescent tubes in our office (about 10 fixtures worth) with the LED tubes. The light is much better quality, IMO.
