over the imagined high cost of things like climate change Originally, as best I recall, the cost was, indeed, high. And painful. I remember admonitions about running the air conditioner. I remember being told to turn down the heat and wear a sweater. And a lot of talk about added taxes. The talk was apocalyptic and stern wrt behavior and demands for resources. The prospect was daunting. I wasn't paying close attention to the evolution but at some point technology bailed us out to considerable extent by taking away the prospect of nothing but pain. As they say, though, you don't get a second chance to make a good first impression and perhaps that lingers.
