Sporting Goods Store Owner Opens Fire During Attempted Robbery In BrooklynJune 28, 2017 9:56 PM

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) – An attempted robbery ended in gunfire at a Brooklyn gun store Wednesday morning.

At around 10:55 a.m. at DF Brothers Sports Center on New Utrecht Avenue in Bensonhurst, a man entered the store and asked to see a gun for sale.

(credit: Jessica Moore/CBS2)

The owner asked the man for his license, at which point the man pulled out a can of pepper spray and sprayed the clerk.

The suspect then smashed a display case with a hammer and grabbed two guns.

The owner pulled out his own gun and fired at the suspect, who dropped the guns and ran off empty handed.

Police believe the suspect may have been hurt in the shooting.

Investigators were on the scene collecting evidence, as well as checking area hospitals to see if anyone came in with a gunshot wound.

Wednesday evening a group of men came out of the store and said the owner is OK, just hoping the suspect can be caught so he doesn’t try again, CBS2’s Jessica Layton reported.

VIDEO: Marine Corps Veteran Wins Gunfight with Three Home Invasion SuspectsA US Marine Corps veteran came out on top during an intense gunfight with three armed suspects at his home in Theodore, Alabama.
By Personal Defense World on June 29, 2017

A 62-year-old United States Marine Corps veteran shot and wounded three home invasion suspects during a gunfight in Theodore, Ala. late last week.

The story begins a couple of weeks ago when the suspects reportedly broke into Michael Irving’s home and stole all of his cancer medication. During that encounter, the thieves threatened to harm him if he reported the incident to police. A week after that, Irving received a threatening phone call from an unknown person.

Undeterred by this, Irving called the authorities to report the robbery and the threatening phone call, and police began an investigation.

Last Thursday evening, the three suspects returned. This time, they were armed with a handgun and a shotgun. Irving said he heard a tap on his front door and “I walked right here to open the door, and that’s when he shot me right there.”

Fortunately, Irving was able to gain the upper hand.

“That’s when I went to the cabinet here and back behind the coffee was an old time pistol,” said Irving. “I opened the door and smoked ’em.”

Irving managed to shoot all three suspects. Two of them fled the scene in a vehicle, but were found by Mobile County Sheriff’s Office deputies at a Dollar General Store just over two miles away after they reported being shot. The third suspect remained wounded at the home.

The suspects—identified as Casey Ray Gann, 29, Joseph Heathcock, 19, and Chaste Dulabhan, 24—were taken to a local hospital for treatment and arrested shortly thereafter. All three have been charged with assault second-degree, robbery first-degree, burglary first-degree and shooting into an occupied dwelling.

Irving, meanwhile, is being hailed as a hero for his actions. He says he partially owes his survival to lessons he learned while in the Corps.

“It surprised me too but when someone just shot and is trying to kill you it just wakes up the dragon,” said Irving. “I learned that in the Marine Corps. You react and do before you get scared. Always react and do it before you get time to get scared.”

In addition, Irving had installed new plexiglass on his door shortly after the first incident, which he believes proved to be the difference-maker.

“Where the bullet hole is, you can see how thick that glass is and that’s what saved me, because it slowed down the buckshot enough.

“If I hadn’t of moved just a little bit, it would have hit me in the chest and sternum and caught me in the heart.”

Irving is now recovering from his wounds. Police are still searching for a fourth suspect whom they believe served as the getaway driver.

Two of the three suspects shot by a 62-year-old marine veteran, when they invaded his home on Thursday (June 22) evening, were denied bond by a Mobile District Court Judge on Friday morning.

Casey Ray Gann, 29, and Joseph Heathcock, 19, were hospitalized on Thursday night following the incident, but appeared in court in front of District Court Judge George Hardesty on Friday.

The third suspect, Chasatie Dulabhan, 24, remains hospitalized at this time.

Mobile County Sheriff's Office detectives said a 62-year-old U.S. Marine Corps veteran shot the suspects when they were tried to invade his home located in the 112000 block of Thomas Road. MCSO detectives said the suspects had broken into the man's home two weeks earlier and took all of his medications.

The suspects threatened to harm the the man if he reported the incident to authorities.

The man told detectives that a week after the burglary, he received a call from an unidentified caller threatening him.

The man reported the first incident and the threatening phone call to authorities and an investigation into both incidents were being conducted.

The man said on Thursday evening the suspects returned to his home again. He told detectives that he believed all three were attempting to break in his home and the male suspect was armed with a shotgun.

The male suspect fired several rounds through the man's front door and he was hit in the shoulder.

The man returned fire with a pistol injuring all three suspects.

Detectives said two of the suspects drove away from the man's home to the Dollar General Store located at 10800 Dauphin Island Parkway, which is a little more than two miles away.

MCSO deputies arrived at the store to find two of the suspects on the ground. Dulabhan was found on the ground outside the man's home by deputies.

At this time the MCSO is trying to determine if a fourth suspect, a black male, was involved in the home invasion.

In district court on Friday, Gann was charged with one count of first-degree robbery in the incident. According to Mobile County Jail records her arrest history dates back to September 2008.

Prior to this incident she was arrested in April and charged with trafficking a controlled substance, possession of a controlled substance and use/possession of drug paraphernalia. She posted bail on those charges.

Heathcock was charged with first-degree assault, first-degree robbery, discharging a gun into an occupied building and felony probation violation in this incident.

Jail records show his arrest history began in October 2014. Prior to this incident he was most recently arrested in June 2016 for first-degree theft of property, three counts of unlawful breaking and entering, harassment and felony probation violation.

Dulabhan was charged with first-degree robbery in this incident. Prior to this incident she was arrested in October 2012 for second-degree assault according to Mobile County jail records.

An arrest warrant was issued for her arrest in June 2015 for two counts of probation revocation.

On Friday, Judge Hardesty set new bond hearings for Gann and Heathcock on Monday, June 26 at 8:30 a.m. in Mobile District Court.

Father, teen son choke kidnapper, shoot him 5 times during attempted robbery

STORY HIGHLIGHTS

The armed kidnapper forced the man and his son from their home to a bank, police said.

The father and son thought they had a chance to get away.

A struggle ensued and shots were fired.

A kidnapper was choked and shot five times during a deadly confrontation after he forced a father and son to drive to an ATM at gunpoint early Wednesday, DeKalb County police said.

Police don’t expect to file charges against Roy Farrell, 39, and his 16-year-old son, who were first confronted by the suspect at The Oaks at Stonecrest Apartment Homes on Evans Mill Road.

“This was a justified shooting (self-defense),” DeKalb police spokeswoman Shiera Campbell said.

The father and son were questioned by police, but were released.

The suspect initially approached the son outside his home and asked for marijuana, according to a police report. When the son, who was not identified, said he didn’t have any, the suspect told the teen to ask his father for a cigarette.

DeKalb police Lt. Shane Stanfield describes home invasion reported before deadly shooting at DeKalb bank.

Just as Farrell was about to get the cigarette, the suspect pulled the gun on the son, aimed it at his head and told him not to say anything. When Farrell walked out of the home, police say the suspect demanded his wallet. Farrell, seemingly unprovoked, then told the suspect where he banked.

They drove from the apartment to a SunTrust Bank on I-20 at Panola Road and backed into a parking space, Lt. Shane Stanfield said.

But when they got there, the suspect made one mistake: he sat his gun down by his side.

Farrell reached for the gun and told his son to choke the suspect, police said.

As the son choked him, police say Farrell shot the suspect five times. One of the shell casings was found above his head.

California Homeowner Shoots Would-Be Intruder in the ChestA California homeowner got the drop on an intruder who kicked in her back door in the middle of the night earlier this week.
By Personal Defense World on June 30, 2017

Guns, as the saying goes, are the great equalizer. And we’re willing to bet a female California homeowner is glad she had her gun when a man kicked down her door in the middle of the night.

It all went down at around 2 a.m. on Monday night in the remote community of Castaic in Los Angeles County. A man later identified as 42-year-old John Velasquez blocked the woman’s driveway with his truck and then walked about a quarter of a mile to the home itself. Upon reaching the house, he started banging on the windows.

Alarmed, the homeowner called 911 and warned Velasquez that she had dogs and a gun on the property. Undeterred, Velasquez continued hitting the windows and eventually kicked in the back door of the woman’s home.

At that point, the woman opened fire on Velasquez, striking him once in the chest.

Police arrived on the scene and Velasquez was transported to an area hospital where he underwent surgery. He’s listed in fair condition and is now facing a burglary charge.

The California homeowner, who lives on the property by herself and runs a training company for dogs called Castaic Canine Camp, says she doesn’t know Velasquez. There wasn’t any indication that she was injured as a result of the failed home invasion.

Neighbors told KHTS that they weren’t surprised the homeowner got the drop on Velasquez, since it normally takes the authorities a while to get to the area, and “residents are prepared for anything that could happen in that time.”

VIDEO: Armed Homeowner Kills 2 Home Invasion Suspects in CaliforniaA security camera captured an armed homeowner shooting and killing two would-be home invaders in self defense in Brentwood, California last week.
By Personal Defense World on June 28, 2017

An armed homeowner in Brentwood, Calif. unloaded on a pair of home invasion suspects last week, killing both in the process, and a neighbor’s security camera captured the moment the fatal shots were fired. Check out the footage above.

The bad guys broke into the home located in the 200 block of Birch Street in Brentwood at around 11:15 p.m. Wednesday, Brentwood police Lt. Walter O’Grodnick told East Bay Times.

Neighbor Reggie Nichols says the homeowner told him the armed suspects entered through his garage.

“He’s always in the garage,” Nichols told KTVU. “He’s sitting in there watching television, just chilling. So his garage was open, I’m pretty sure. It’s always open.”

The suspects walked in and reportedly ordered the homeowner to open a safe. Instead of producing cash or valuables from his safe, however, the homeowner pulled out a handgun and started shooting.

The video above shows the masked bad guys entering the garage, then lights flashing, followed by the suspects running out as the homeowner fires at them.

Both suspects were pronounced dead at the scene.

Nichols said he saw a car that took off down the street shortly after the shooting, though police haven’t said if they are searching for additional suspects.

“I’m ticked off, because this kind of stuff doesn’t happen around here,” Nichols said. “It’s a good neighborhood. It’s been a really long time since something like this.”

It’s the first time since 2012 that a murder has taken place in Brentwood, East Bay Times said.

The deceased home invasion suspects have been identified as Ellis Williams III, 38, and Joseph Brooks, 32. Each were shot at least once by the homeowner, who was uninjured and is cooperating with the investigation. He won’t face any charges as a result of his actions.

“The preliminary information shows it to be a home-invasion robbery,” O’Grodnick said. “Two suspects. One with a firearm. They presented a threat, and the shooting was prompted in self-defense.”
