While I established that Richard Nixon was a liberal on domestic policies*, those liberal policies didn't solve the nation's problems.

Human problems ultimately stem from human nature, not from a government that isn't generous enough. BTW governments only get the free stuff they distribute by taking it from someone else.

Give people a negative income tax and most will simply sit on their ass and lobby for more and more and more (I was a high school kid when Nixon was talking up a negative income tax and I recognized the problem) ..... poverty will keep being redefined. You can't eliminate a problem that is based on shifting definitions.

*EPA, OSHA, affirmative action, wage and price controls, keynesianism. You might think he wasn't a liberal because he was anti-communist, but in those days liberals WERE anti-communist.

Nixon wanted federally supported national health care for all and a negative income tax for the poor but didn't get those passed. Even Democrats balked at the cost. I remember being a teenager in the late 1960's and I found the negative income tax shocking.
