Eric, if the world goes with the Tesla Ton battery option, yes, there would be 40 new gigafactories needed.

But if people choose the cute little economical 7SSS [tm] option, there would be only 20 new gigafactories needed. Or maybe only 10. Or even 5.

Town Tootling cars don't need big batteries. Average commuting distances are low. Recharging at home or at an office is easily done on a daily basis, with incidental recharges at supermarkets and other parking spots.

The 40 gigafactory option assumes that everyone would want to buy a ton of battery to lug around wasting energy, capital and requiring a stronger, heavier, more expensive car to cart it around.
