Amazon.com "store" closed by technical problems

SEATTLE, Jan 7 (Reuters) - Amazon.com <AMZN.O>, frequently
cited as one of the biggest commercial success stories on the
Internet, was closed by unspecified technical problems
Wednesday.
Attempts to reach the popular Web site were greeted by a
"We're sorry!" billboard. "Our store is closed temporarily,"
said the message.
Company spokeswoman Kay Dangaard said the site was closed
about 10 a.m. PST (1 p.m. EST) after an unspecified technical
problem was discovered during an unscheduled maintenance check
and likely would not be operating again until after 6 p.m. (9
p.m. EST)
"It is small problem but has nothing to do with our
security system or databases," she said.
Dangaard said the problem was not serious, but technicians
were checking the system thoroughly before bringing it back on
line. She said the outage was the longest since a daylong
shutdown in June, when a problem was discovered during a
routine maintenance check.
Amazon.com had sales of about $38 million in its latest
quarter, or $420,000 a day.
