SEQUENT COMPUTER said it would team up with DIGITAL EQPMT to
produce a new 64-bit version of the UNIX operating system. The
move was a blow to SUN MICROSYSTEMS, which had tried to get
Sequent to choose a planned version of Solaris, its proprietary
Unix variant, for Intel Corp.'s 64-bit Merced chip, due out in
1999. The move was the latest step in a consolidation of Unix
versions that is expected to gain momentum ahead of the release of
the next generation Intel processor. (Reuters 07:24 PM ET

Gene: Well, Intel can make their life a just a bit miserable if they want to ,but not very likely i have to admit. There are varioius ways of doing it, like treating them a bit differently than DELL,HP etc who have been relatively more friendlier than CPQ,they can also give special incentives to certain prefered customers. I heard Toys R Us playing a bit dirty ,it is not like it hasn't been done before.
