Coal has a long supply chain and lost market share to oil, whose supply chain is shorter, being easily transported through giant tankers and pipelines. Now oil is faced with competition from technology driven energy sources whose supply chains are even shorter. Oil has the advantage of trillions of dollars in existing infrastructure so it isn't going away any time soon, but if I were going to build a billion dollar refinery I would likely think twice....
