Soros surely is a profiteer, But I would consider him a net plus to the world considering he is giving away most of what he has.He has given more to some east european countries than the US Govmnt, the 8 trillion pound gorilla. Along with Ted Turner (1 Billion to the Un fame ) and Jon Huntsman (60 - 100 mil to Cancer research etc) These super rich may actually be doing what governments have failed to do.
Besides it takes one hell of a lot of advertising and organization to generate so much cash, some charities spend 60c on the dollar on advts.
The chaos in Asia would have happened sooner or later, IMHO it is not possible to have a couple of billion people and 20 odd countries based on export led growth for ever. The more export dependent any largish country becomes the more it becomes dependent on the importer, just like power shifting to large debtor from the creditor, once the debt is too large.
