Microsoft unveils plans for car dashboard computer

biz.yahoo.com

The software giant, which dominates the market for personal computer software, also said it planned to ship a version of its Windows CE operating system for hand-held devices that will compete directly with 3Com Corp.'s (Nasdaq:COMS - news) popular PalmPilot.

Okay, now for some fun at MicroSofty's expense. Let's see what innovations Bill has been dreaming up..

Mundie said the product would feature an AM-FM stereo and CD player, but also would be able to accept voice commands and translate text messages to a synthetic voice output...

I wonder if Bill has been introduced to "hands free" cellular yet? You know, to like listen to voice msgs ppl have left for you?

That would allow users to listen to electronic mail messages, traffic reports or navigational directions.

Traffic reports!!! Wow! It's about time we were able to get traffic reports in our cars. Isn't 1998 wonderful so far? I feel like I'm living in like, the future. -GG-

Future applications will allow the devices to be integrated with cellular telephones, pagers and the diagnostic system of the car itself, Mundie said.

Oh yes, of course. That way, we can have Win95, Win98, etc., crash our car's electronics also. It gets so boring watching a humble PC freeze up. I wanna see Win95 freeze up my car's electronics while I'm driving! NOT!!!

And my cell phone has been working just fine. Thank you very much anyway for thinking of me, Bill. But I really must be going....-G-

Hang Seng dives below 10,000 mark:

Hang Seng ^HSI 11:30PM 9110.46 -428.15 -4.49%

As I recall the Hang Seng closes at 1:00AM PST, so we'll see what happens...these Asian markets can turn on a dime whilst one is one the throne doing duties. -GG- Japan still hanging in there on the plus side tonight.
