He's a persistent optimist. Maybe he thinks he can eventually soften them up. "There will be more exclusives for you if you lighten up on me a bit." He's a big believer in the carrot and the stick.

Every time he gives an interview to a fake news outlet, it ends up hurting him. There would be no Mueller investigation if he didn't give an interview to Lester Holt at NBC.
