****Amazon.com Back Online 01/08/98 TOKYO, JAPAN, 1998 JAN 8 (NB) -- By Martyn Williams, Newsbytes. The Internet's biggest bookstore, Amazon.com [NASDAQ:AMZN], is back online after a technical problem forced the site off line for almost twelve hours. Since around lunch time pacific time, visitors to the Web site were greeted with a message that said, "We're sorry! Our store is closed temporarily. If you enter your e-mail address, we'll notify you as soon as we reopen."

The bookstore, one of the most successful retailers on the Web, described the unavailability of the store as down to a simple technical problem. Explaining the long outage, the company said it was because staff wanted to make sure everything was working perfectly before the site went back online.

In the third quarter of 1997, the last quarter for which results were available, Amazon.com said is has sales of $37.9 million, or approximately $420,000 per day.
