Well, from what I have seen, he obtained multiple student deferments and finally a medical exemption saving him from the draft. I can find nothing saying that he "tried to join up."

I served the same time you did, 62-65. Started at Fort Riley, KS with the Big Red One, HQ Troop, 1st Recon Squadron, 4th Cav as an admin clerk specializing in Courts & Boards.

Transferred in 1964 to the 11th Air Assault Division (Test), fort Benning, GA, again handling Courts & Boards and working with the JAG.. Being in Airborne, you might have been there at the same time. As you know, the 11th became the 1st Cav Division in 1965 and that outfit was then sent to Vietnam. When the unit change took place, I had very little time left, so helped my friends pack and then received a two weeks early separation. I would take nothing for those three years!!!
