If you like to eat you should like to cook, as one of the the essential skills is tasting along the way. Another important part is chemistry.

There's nothing worse than eating food you can be certain the cook never tasted.

My Dad's father let me cook a cake when my grandmother was out and I was perhaps four or five years old. He insisted I decide what the ingredients should be, refusing to provide me with any suggestions or advise except to taste it as I went along. I remember I added raisins, cinnamon, milk, flour and butter. He helped me with the mixer. I was so excited watching it in the oven.

I'm sure the result must have been terrible and my grandmother and parents were horrified by the kitchen upon their return, but at the time I thought it was one of the best things I had ever tasted.
