COMPANY TO WATCH

San Fransisco Business Times, Wednesday, January 07, 1998 at 20:31

Ascend Communications
After rocketing to prominence in the networking world and giving
its shareholders incredible returns in 1995 and 1996, Ascend hit the
wall in 1997. Its stock dropped from $80 a share into the low $20s
before rebounding in December on merger rumors.
Ascend's CEO Mory Ejabat and his team want to maintain Ascend's
independence. But to be a player in the networking major leagues and
compete with Cisco Systems, 3Com and Bay Networks, Alameda-based
Ascend may not have the critical mass. Don't be surprised if Lucent
Technologies or Northern Telecom makes a run at Ascend early in
1998.
