Business Wire via Dow Jones

ROCKY HILL, Conn.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Jan. 8, 1998--Nextel Communications
(NASDAQ:NXTL), the nation's premier wireless service for business users, has
opened its first office in Connecticut and plans to rapidly expand its coverage
area within the state and in Western Massachusetts.

Joe Kobylak, a Madison resident, and current vice president for marketing in
Nextel's New York Area, has been named general manager for Connecticut and
Western Massachusetts. "We've offered digital wireless service to Connecticut
customers since December 1994 through our White Plains office, and we will now
serve those customers with an office in Rocky Hill," said Kobylak. "This office
represents our long-term commitment to be a major player in Connecticut and
Western Massachusetts -- areas that are home to a wide variety of manufacturing
and service industries, including many Fortune 500 companies."

Nextel's service is targeted toward business users, Kobylak explained. Nextel
phones include digital cellular, text and numeric paging, and Nextel Direct
Connect(SM), a unique two-way radio capability that allows users to instantly
reach co-workers at a fraction of the cost of conventional cellular. Nextel's
local coverage area extends from Springfield, Mass., south to Atlantic City,
N.J.

Nationally, Nextel offers extensive coverage in approximately 400 cities.
Business travelers can use their Nextel phones in these areas, as well as in
portions of Canada, without paying roaming fees.

"Connecticut is an important market to Nextel because of its heavy
concentration of businesses and its strategic location between New York City and
Boston," said John Pescatore, president of Nextel's New York area . "Because
Nextel's local Connecticut coverage is linked with that of New York and New
Jersey, we can offer customers an immense local coverage area."

"This is an exciting time for Nextel," Kobylak added. "Over the last year
we've introduced our digital service in several major markets throughout the
U.S. Here at home, we look forward to introducing our unique services to the
business community within Connecticut and Western Massachusetts."
