Re: Capacity and ATAPI..

Dale, just following up a little on the ATAPI version of
the Zip drive.

They have been available to all of the OEM's and resellers,
not just the big guys. This has been concerted effort by IOM to
satisfy product demand of the trade as a whole.

The ATAPI drive is vastly different than any of the other
available Zip drives. Although I'm not an expert on
cost analysis, the difference appears to be substantial.
These guys have gotten it down to a science, this
is without a doubt their low cost model.

A lot of the box makers are using Zip as an add on sale to
improve their margins. The cost to me is $90.00 so these
box makers ( paying a lot less ) are making an extra $80.00, + -
with each Zip add on they sell. I guess that's good enough
incentive to push the drives, the pricing pressure on these boxes
will put extra emphasis on those add-on sales. When these
drives first hit the street the cost was around $129.00 .

One of K.E.'s Top priorities of better customer service
has happened. These guys got the word and made it work.
I've commented twice on this and I still want to say more.

Last week I receive a special pin code to use for express
trouble shooting from IOM. I was surprised to see the promotion
of relationships to the smaller resellers and box makers.
A plan coming together.

Just one other thing, I did stumble across a OEM 5 pk internal
SCSI Zips without controller in stock which is great for the MAC
guys but doesn't do much for us IBM- ers, we need the controller.

For the DOCTOR, I have some questions that I would like to submit
in the upcoming conference call if you could be so kind to consider.

Looking forward to a great quarter.

Re: Capacity and ATAPI

I have a feeling that we will soon need a new ATAPI standard. 2 Channels and upto 4 devices is really not enough for the transistion period of DVD and NexGen Floppy. Right now Zip, Jaz/SparQ/Syjet, CDR, CD-RW, CD-ROM, DVD-ROM are all good candidate for ATAPI devices. IMO, we really need a 4 channels ATAPI standard but this will substantially increase the complexity of ATAPI. If this is possible, we can even implement a low-cost EIDE based RAID!

"Since OEMs are still taking priority and the transition from IDE is still taking place, there is a real possibility they could have excess capacity for one drive and not enough capacity for the other."

You still can't find internals very often. When you do, they are SCSI. The big retail chains never have any internals other than the occasional scsi that lasts in stock for about 2 seconds before someone realizes it is there. I stand by my previous post.
