<<It forecasts
world demand for hard disk drives will jump 20 percent this year and this growth,
together with a potential shortage of drive media, [???] has prompted the
company to construct the new factory.>>
Why don't they just buy Stormedia. Actually, maybe we should be looking into that.

"Fujitsu To Build $200m Hard Disk Plant In Philippines 01/07/98"

They better have cash. I can't imagine loans in Asia to build disk drive expansion right now.

Gus,
A remarkable investment. In an article that I think you posted last week, the head of Fujitsu's drive division said something like, "Don't blame us for the overcapacity and falling ASPs, blame the companies with the 80% market share."

Re: New Fujitsu Plant

This plant is scheduled to open in late 1999, about a year and a half from now. This could actually be a savvy move for Fujitsu, setting themselves up to step in if demand picks up at that point, while the other players cut back and re-evaluate. Whether demand will pick up is of course the big question.

As far as their forecast of +20% world HDD demand, if they're talking about dollars then I don't think so. Units maybe.
