The way I add up the numbers in the Belgian gold article, they did not buy in 1997 but sold.

At the end of 1996 they had 476 tonnes having sold 203 tonnes during the year. In 1997 they received the 20% EMI refund of 40.6 tonnes due to the 1996 sales. Add them and you get 516.6 tonnes (476 + 40.6 = 516.6). This is what they should have had at the end of 1997.

However the article indicated 484 tonnes at the end of 1997, which means they must have sold about 32.6 tonnes in 1997 (484 - 516.6 = 32.6). A 20% EMI refund of 6.52 tonnes will presumably come in 1998.

I look forward to their official release to clear this up.
