Colin, thanks for your detailed reply. Yes, it is full-time 9:30 to 4:00, it does generate substantial income, and the trading income is from small, fractional gains. The problems derive from the fact that (a) I want to have an "investor" portfolio of 100+ stocks and (b) you can't effectively trade a "trader" porfolio of more than, say, 20 stocks. The positions in the trader stocks tend to be a lot larger but it is certain that the 100 investor stocks will have substantial income (from dividends if nothing else) on an absolute basis, and it may comprise, say 30%, on a relative basis. Another complicating factor is that I will hold overnight or longer to get my fractional trader gains.

Is it a solution for me to not sell my "investor" holdings at a gain during years I elect trader status, selling only losers? Or maybe I bunch my "investor" transactions on the first trading day of each month to show intent?
