Great observation.

I imagine every president has to face 'the generals', who's only tool is their particular hammer and every problem is just another nail to drive. I can't really imagine the fear mongering president's must face, knowing that American's ( and foreign allies ) safety depend on the decisions they HAVE to make.

It's really curious that now we're depending on 'the generals' to keep Trump in check.

Regarding the "Generals" just ask yourself why we "wisely" have civilian control of the military.

All Generals do not always want war -- they influence, but ultimately serve to implement the President's strategies.

Trump ultimately controls Mattis, we're in a one-off for the ages we'd probably rather have Mattis control Trump, and we could end up there if things really go to hell.

I for one would not be surprised if Trump has already decided on at least one military strike, and wants to make it a shock-and-awe Hollywood style surprise, complete with "critical press" censorship. It fits with his promises.

The worst case is the global dominoes fall against the USA; and the US becomes an island surrounded by a wall, while nationalist Trump wears the flag and the economy fails.

I feel if the investigation shows collusion that effectively spread lies about Clinton that were targeted at key electoral states, there is a reasonable case for a special Presidential election before 2020. I am not giving up-- I am in the .00001% here.
